Berroia

Berroia
   There were two important cities with this name. One is modern Aleppo in northern Syria (q.v.), which was seized by the Persians (q.v.) from 604-628, then captured by the Arabs (q.v.) in 636. It was recaptured by Nikephoros II Phokas (q.v.) from the Hamdanids (q.v.) in 962, becoming briefly a vassal state of the Byzantines. The attempts of Basil II (q.v.) to maintain control of the city ultimately failed. The other Berroia (Verroia) is the modern city of the same name in northern Greece (q.v.).
